Josef Fischer Riesling 'Ried Kirnberg' Smaragd Wachau 2021Situated immediately northwest of Fischers home village of Rossatz, the north facing Kirnberg vineyard comprises various soil types: paragneiss at its base with dark mica and magnesium distributed throughout, terrace rubble higher up on its eastern flanks, and loess rich topsoil. Fischer produces a smaragd level Riesling from this site which combines the intense, focused acidity typical of these north facing sites with a slightly honeyed fruit profile.

The grape composition is predominantly Merlot with a touch of Cabernet Franc in the blend that provides additional structure to the wine

which takes place in stainless steel via naturally occurring yeasts and with no temperature control

and the second gives fruit

The vines are trained in a special way on pergola (known as “tupin” in local dialect) to obtain maximum exposure to the sun in this high altitude district and are planted to soils that are dominated by slate
